How Do You Find The Best Replacement Electric Motor For Your Snow Plow?

Posted on

If you live in an area where you get a lot of snow, your snow plow can be one of the most useful pieces of equipment you have in your garage. Many snow plow owners prefer an electric motor because they do not want to have to deal with buying fuel for their snow blower when they may not even be able to get to the store. Additionally, electric snowplows tend to offer a longer lifespan than a regular gas-powered model can. Unfortunately, these motors can eventually go out and will need to be replaced. Take a look at some of the attributes to be looking for when you have to buy a replacement electric snow plow motor.

Look for a unit that comes with a warranty.

One of the first things that every buyer should be watching for when they pick up a replacement snow plow motor is a warranty that will come with the purchase. This warranty is a good sign that the manufacturer is confident in the product they are selling. The warranty will cover things like the following:

  • defects in the overall build of the unit
  • defects in the electrical wiring of the unit
  • defects of the connection points of the unit

Look for a unit that offers multiple coils inside instead of just one.

Single-coil snowblower motors are not quite as durable or reliable as a unit that has multiple coils inside. Therefore, it is almost always better to find units that have more than one coil inside the motor. Even though single coils will work to generate power, the motor may lose power more frequently and may actually not offer the same stable blowing power that you really want. Even though multiple-coil units can be a little more expensive, they are the better option.

Look for a unit that is made by a manufacturer that is still in business.

It is not uncommon to find electric snowblower motors from some suppliers that have long been out of production. Suppliers that offer surplus mechanical products will sometimes have these units because they will buy the bulk of a manufacturer's inventory when they go out of business. Even though this creates a good opportunity to get a motor for cheap, it can also mean that you are buying a unit that may be difficult to work on if you have problems down the road. It is better to buy a motor that is still being made.
